Exciting. I can't wait for 1000-HP, fat slicks and 18" rims in the future. That sounds insane.

Are they making anything close to 1000 HP? I thought they were still floating between 750 and 800 before KERS.

Nope, they are around 800 with full ERS, 650 from the engine alone. Niki Lauda and others have been saying recent F1 cars are not the epitome of performance because the regulations are holding them back. One of the ways to "fix" F1 is to reintroduce 1000 hp engines, but it won't happen until at least 2016, most likely 2017 (if it ever happens).

I would be very surprised if they're only putting out 650 from just the engine. That implies they're making less than (or at) 1.5 bar of boost at the 15000 rpm limit.

I'd like to see them bump back up to 18000 and increase displacement a little. 2L is all they need to hit that 1000HP number then if they're still at the same boost level.

I dare say F1 is kind of boring from a tech standpoint these days. LMP-1 on the other hand....

Yeah. The coolest parts of F1 recently was the clever management of heat control of KERS and the ways to do adjustable aero / exhaust blown aero. But those have all been banned or standardized. Moreover, there's not a real need for innovation because of how noncompetitive it is with Mercedes dominating.

LMP-1 is getting scary awesome. Every year it looks more and more like something out of a crazy anime.

I never expected this crazy boom we're seeing with LMP-1. After Peugot bowed out when Audi became too competitive I wasn't sure what was going to happen to the field. Then Toyota came out of nowhere and said "hey guys, we can race too!" Then came Porsche and now Nissan is looking to try something really excitingly radical. There's more variation and innovation with LMP-1 than F1 right now. It's a shame for F1 but awesome for LMP. I'm actually really surprised at how well LMP-1 has been able to innovate. I realize that millions are being spent and men and women are at work tirelessly to try and innovate in F1 but all the damn rules hold them back so much. This is why I'm so super excited to see what happens with Nissan's LMP-1 car.

Innovation in F1 is found in minutia, not major breakthroughs or really radical thinking. The cars are a collection of small details that work together to push the cars as far as the rules allow.KERS was cool and I'm glad it's stuck around but the way it's being used is lame. The F-duct was a really cool workaround for the rules. Blown aero was brilliant, but as you said most of this has been tamed.
